Adult Acne in Your 30s and 40s — Why It Happens and What Helps

If you are breaking out in your thirties or forties, you are not doing anything wrong. I hear this in the clinic all the time. Women who had lovely clear skin for years, suddenly getting spots along the jaw and chin, sometimes down the neck. It is upsetting, and it feels like it has come out of nowhere.

So let me say this early. Your skin has not turned on you. It is reacting to something, and once we work out what, we can actually do something about it.

It Is Rarely About Cleansing

Most people’s first move is to scrub harder or strip everything back. I understand why. But nine times out of ten that makes things worse, not better.

Acne at this age is hardly ever about how clean your skin is. It is usually your body flagging that something has changed on the inside, and your skin is just the place you can see it.

—Spots along the jaw, chin or neck

—Clear skin for years, then suddenly reactive

—Breakouts that flare around your cycle or a stressful week

—Skin that gets worse the more you strip your routine back

—Products that used to suit you, now leaving you irritated

The Patterns I See Most Often

A handful of things come up over and over with the women I see here in Aylesbury.

Hormonal shifts. Perimenopause starts earlier than most women realise, sometimes in the mid thirties. As your hormones move around, skin can go oily in some spots and dry in others, and the breakouts tend to settle around the jaw and chin. If that rings a bell, I go into it properly in my post on perimenopausal skin changes.

Stress. If you are running on empty and permanently a bit wired, your cortisol stays high. High cortisol tells the skin to make more oil, and that oil feeds breakouts.

Gut health. Your gut and your skin are far more connected than people think. When your digestion is struggling, that often shows up on your face as inflammation.

The wrong products. Too many strong actives, too many layers, and you slowly wear down your skin barrier. A worn out barrier breaks out more easily, not less.

Skin doesn’t change randomly. We change.

A real client result — we treated the cause, not just the surface

Why Treating the Surface Alone Doesn’t Last

This is where so many women get stuck. A treatment works, for a bit. Then the same breakout turns up in the same spot a few weeks later, and it feels like you are back to square one.

If hormones, stress or your gut are part of what is going on, treating only the surface will only ever calm things for a while. The cause is still there, so it flares up again, usually in the exact same place.

What Actually Helps

—Look after your skin barrier rather than stripping it back

—Watch how your skin behaves around your cycle and busy weeks

—Think about hormones, gut and lifestyle, not just what goes on your face

—Get your skin properly looked at before you spend on more products

Treatments absolutely have their place. They just work so much better once we know what is actually driving your skin in the first place.
